EDWIN MANSFIELD has been a pioneer in collecting data on industrial research and development and building models to explain research and development decisions. This book is based on papers written over half a dozen years and published in as many journals. In reading these papers, it appeared that Mansfield had an overall design to his previous forays. Furthermore, while critics have objected to parts of some papers, it seemed that the entire series could lend plausibility to each paper by testing the same propositions in different ways and with different data.
